Collection

The museum's own collection comprises only around 350 Fischer sculptures in various working techniques (clay, bronze, iron, plaster/styrofoam) from all phases of Lothar Fischer's work as well as numerous works on paper (graphics, gouaches, collages, brush and ink drawings, sketchbooks). In order to keep the house alive, a permanent presentation has been deliberately avoided. Only the well-known works "Wagenlenker", 1962, "Enigma-Variationen", 1996/97, as well as "Hohe Eva" and "Hoher Adam", 2003, are on permanent display, as they were deliberately integrated into the architecture and concept of the museum.

In addition to his own artistic activities, the sculptor began collecting works by other artists and cultures at an early stage. The pieces in his collection were rarely acquired on the art market. Most of the works came into the couple's possession as gifts or in exchange with artist friends. During the time of Lothar Fischer's collaboration with the Munich artist groups SPUR (1957-1965), WIR and GEFLECHT, for example, it was customary to exchange works with one another. He also exchanged works with colleagues during his time as a university professor in Berlin. Today, the former private collection of Lothar and Christel Fischer, which mainly comprises figurative art from the 1960s to 1990s as well as non-European objects, is part of the museum's holdings. Here, the collection works are integrated into various presentations and brought into dialogue with Fischer's works or the special exhibitions. Numerous donations to the Lothar & Christel Fischer Foundation usefully supplement the holdings of the museum, which does not have an acquisition budget. Most of the museum's holdings have been digitised, but are not accessible online.
